JCP Support Grams - A Martin Patrick 3 Lifestyle

The JCP + Martin Patrick 3 Lifestyle came to an amazing finale on the evening of April 11th, and as one of the creators of short film, I can confidently say we were wrapped with the response of the film and the pre-party for ENVISION: Artopia. Despite the constant rain and snow dumping over the night, we had a strong turn out and wouldn’t have nearly been as fun without the local support!

In the weeks leading up to the event, it was a blast to go around town and spread the word.  It was a pleasure to meet and greet with the Twin Cities local businesses and I thank you for participating in the #JCPSupportGrams! It was a great series of pics that I was pumped to get. So heres a big shout out, thanking you for the support! I hope I can return the favor someday.

Putting on an Event -  ”A Martin Patrick 3 Lifestyle”
As we approach the premiere of A Martin Patrick Lifestyle, only days away from April 11, I just want to sit back from the promotional drive of the event and get real for a second.
Since being at JCP, shooting and creating new work, whether it be paid or personal, it is something that goes hand in hand. Neither succeeds without the contribution of others.  I have been blessed to work with so many talented people over the past few months, who all bring something to the table. Talents you didn’t know you needed until you met them and weeks down the track realize “how could I have done this without you?!”
Events like this are rare, and for good reason, they are a lot of work!
So here’s to raising a delicious glass of Indeed Thursday night with you all. Thank you for all your hard efforts over the past months.   Hoping it will be a warm spring evening, if it’s not, anything will be better than the frozen tundra Minnesota has had this winter. Looking forward to connecting with you again and those who I have yet to meet.

Aussie On Set - MN Twins “Winter Baseball” 60 TV Spot

Late January, the peak harshness of winter in Minnesota. Instead of chilling somewhere warm, I was working on frozen Brownie Lake, Minneapolis with the Jonathan Chapman Photography machine, shooting a TV spot for the Minnesota Twins Community Fund.  Teaming up with Martin WilliamsVolt StudiosPicture Factory, and Tasty Lighting; the overall collaboration was literally one of the “coolest” experiences I have had on set…Literally. It was a great atmosphere, fun crew and carving a baseball diamond out of the snow and ice definitely got us all pretty excited.  With the combination of Hockey, Baseball and the Decemberists “January Hymn”, hopefully it will get Minnesotans just as excited as we were.

Being an Aussie, use to “winters” not dropping below 32ºF (0ºC), I have to say I was quite proud of my efforts to keep it together and stay warm working on a frozen lake for 8 hours plus in 19ºF conditions (I don’t care what you say critics that’s bloody cold!). Wish I could say the same about some of the local Minnesotans…

The 30 second spot is currently airing on TV and will be also screened at Target Field when the Twins 2013 season kicks off. For more information on the shoot check about the JCP Blog and stay tuned for the Behind The Scenes Video of the shoot which will be launched on Twins opening day April 1st.

North 47°

The 47th parallel, a circle of latitude that is 47 degrees north of the Earth’s equatorial plane. On a stormy November morning along the coast of Lake Superior, Minnesota, Photographer Jonathan Chapman captured the essence of a storm, described by locals as the fiercest of the season. Editing the piece was equally as engaging. It is incredible to see the raw beauty of violent and turbulent nature combine with music and rhythmic editing to form a serene cinematic piece.

2012 Wrapped
Staring down the barrel of 2013, if someone were to tell me a year ago this is where you will be by the end of 2012, I’d say “You’re Bloody Joking Mate!”.
2012. What a ride it has been… Since leaving Australia and making the almighty big plunge into the American freelance industry, you’ve thrown me curve balls left, right and centre. Settling in Minneapolis, Minnesota; provoking the question for many, “why the hell did you pick Minnesota?” The thought often crossed my mind over the year, but now I can confidently say “Why the hell not?!”
Freelancing as a Cinematographer/Editor, I’ve met some really great and talented people here in the Twin Cities. Which proves you dont have to go to LA or New York to get work. If you’re talented and hardworking, like so many Minnesotans are, the work will eventually pursue you. I discovered this upon meeting Photographer/Director Jonathan Chapman who is a case example. The past couple of years have been an even bigger ride for Chapman’s Still and Motion brand, landing gigs with McDonalds, Microsoft and Samsung across the North and South America, China and Australia.
Meeting and working with Chapman and his crew has without a doubt been the highlight of my year. Taking a leaf from his book, the learning experiences are second to none. Chapman’s module of work demonstrates a rather humble approach to learning. What a new team member brings to the table is a crucial part of the melting pot. He can learn from you just as much as you will from him.
It has been amazing discovering talented people such as Jonathan Chapman plus many other creatives throughout the year in the Twin Cities. Which is why I can’t believe the postion I find myself in knowing the talent that is out there.
For a year which was suppose to result in the end has proven to be anything but. If 2013 has got anything similar to offer, I look forward to blazing ahead to the new territories that await.
As for you 2012, I farewell you with fond memories, surprises, long hours, great people, and great experiences.
It’s been the “Bees Knees!” 20-12

Read about the FS700 shoot working with Jonathan Chapman Photography, there’s some cool stuff we got to work with. The Sky was the limit!
intern-spective:

Since we received the Sony FS700 video camera, we’ve been wanting to do a motion test exploring it’s super slow motion capabilities. The idea of children playing jump rope came into mind; it offered a lot of movement and some interesting visuals for this particular project. It ended up becoming somewhat of a period piece, with the girls dressed in 50’s style dresses and filming on historic Milwaukee Ave in town. We also brought on some help from Picture Factory with the use of their RC helicopter to get some aerial shots. It was really exciting utilizing these two new gadgets and having the freedom at the same time to improvise and approach the project in some experimental ways. The best part was being able to have an idea and just run with it. I’m so excited to check out the footage and see this idea come to life.

Drive The Line is a new web series following adventures and journeys across some of America’s most beautiful roads. Following a young man’s journey, without a film crew, only using an SLR, and a Go Pro, these web videos with hopefully portray a more personal experience of living independently on the road. So if this inspires you to have your own adventure. What are you waiting for? Drive the Line. Follow on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nathaniel-Schmidt-Media/154397624637253

I beg young people to travel. If you don’t have a passport, get one. Take a summer, get a backpack and go to Delhi, go to Saigon, go to Bangkok, go to Kenya. Have your mind blown. Eat interesting food. Dig some interesting people. Have an adventure. Be careful. Come back and you’re going to see your country differently, you’re going to see your president differently, no matter who it is. Music, culture, food, water. Your showers will become shorter. You’re going to get a sense of what globalization looks like. It’s not what Tom Friedman writes about; I’m sorry. You’re going to see that global climate change is very real. And that for some people, their day consists of walking 12 miles for four buckets of water. And so there are lessons that you can’t get out of a book that are waiting for you at the other end of that flight. A lot of people—Americans and Europeans—come back and go, Ohhhhh. And the light bulb goes on.
